Teen/Adolescent Health

Youth & Adolescent Mental Health

Growing up isn’t always easy. School pressures, friendships, social media, exams, family changes, and identity questions can all feel overwhelming.

If a young person in your life seems withdrawn, anxious, low in mood, or “not themselves,” it’s important to know that support is available.

At our practice, we provide a safe and confidential space for young people to talk.

When Should a Young Person See a GP?

It may be helpful to make an appointment if a child or teenager is experiencing:

  • Persistent sadness or tearfulness

  • Anxiety, panic attacks, or excessive worry

  • School refusal or difficulty concentrating

  • Changes in sleep or appetite

  • Withdrawal from friends or activities

  • Irritability or anger outbursts

  • Self-harm or thoughts of self-harm

Early support can make a significant difference.

What Happens at the Appointment?

We aim to create a calm, supportive environment where young people feel heard and respected.

Depending on age and circumstances:

  • Part of the consultation may be spent speaking with the young person alone

  • Confidentiality will be explained clearly

  • Parents or guardians will be involved where appropriate

Our priority is ensuring the young person feels safe and supported.

Referral Pathways in Ireland

If specialist support is needed, we can refer to:

  • Primary Care Psychology Services

  • CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services)

  • Community supports and counselling services

We will guide families through the referral process and discuss waiting times and alternative supports where necessary
